"You know what, today miss scolded me." Nine years old Anvi said.

"You deserve it" a boy aged ten years replied.

"You are the one who deserves it." Anvi fought back.

"Is that so?" Aryan questioned while tilting his head.

"You are bad and idiot." Anvi said as she furrowed her brows.

"Then you are..." He thought for some time and then added "Annoying."

"Haww, now you will say like this to me?" Anvi questioned back in her little childish voice.

"Of course" Aryan replied.

"You are so mean."

"And still you ended up being my best friend."

"No I am not your best friend anymore." Anvi said while crossing her arms over her chest with a pout.

"Haww, now you will do this to me?" This time Aryan questioned back with puppy eyes.

"Yes. Me katti" Anvi said back and turned her face.

"Is my little girl upset with her best friend now?" Aryan said while bending down to match her height.

"Me not your little girl anymore."

"You are. Whether you like it or not."

"I don't want to talk to you. Go away." Anvi said while walking away.

A car sped towards the little girl who was now crossing the road.

"Anvi, wait." Aryan screamed.

He immediately ran towards her without thinking and pulled her back.

At the same time the car stopped just a few centimetres away from the two kids now lying in the middle of the road.

Aryan immediately stood up pulling Anvi with him.

"Anvi, are you hurt?" Aryan asked with concern etching on the tiny boy's face.

"I am fine." Anvi replied.

"Kids are you hurt? I am so sorry. I didn't see the little girl walking. Do you want me to take you to the hospital?" The driver of the car came out of the car and ran towards the kids.

"We are fine, uncle. We don't need to go to the hospital." Anvi replied respectfully.

"Okay, but I am still sorry." The driver apologised once again before getting back into his car and driving it away.

The moment the driver was gone, Aryan turned towards Anvi and snapped "Anvi, are you blind or what? Didn't you see the car coming? God has given you eyes not just to turn away from me but also for your own safety."

The little girl's eyes filled with tears. Aryan saw them and melted within seconds.

"Come here" he ordered as he opened his arms for her.

Anvi moved towards him and embraced him. Tears started falling from her eyes.

Aryan patted her head and reassured her "shh. It's okay. I am sorry. Please don't cry."

Anvi pulled back to wipe her face but saw the scratch on his left knee which was bleeding slightly.

"Blood. You are bleeding." Anvi noted.

"I am fine." Aryan tried to brush it off but Anvi pulled out a bandage from her little bag she was carrying.

"Why are you carrying bandages?" Aryan asked as curiosity rises inside him.

"Mumma always asks me to carry bandages. She says it can be required anytime." she explained and Aryan nodded.

Anvi kneeled down to apply the bandage on his scratch. She didn't put it there immediately, she blew over the scratch first and then she put the bandage carefully. After applying the bandage, she leaned towards his knee and kissed his knee over the bandage.

"Now it will heal fast. Mumma says kisses make injuries heal faster." She said while standing upright.

"Thank you" He thanked her.

"No need for thanking me, idiot. She said.

Anvi played with the strap of her bag for a moment.

"Aryan..."

"Hmm?"

"Papa got transferred."

"Ohh that's good." He replied back.

"Good? We are moving to another city." Anvi explained.

Aryan froze. He didn't say anything for a few minutes.

"We are separating?" He finally spoke up as realisation struck him.

"Maybe." She muttered while nodding.

"But I promise to come and meet you once I get older like mumma and papa." She added.

"When will you leave?" He questioned counting the time left with her.

"Maybe next week." She answered.

"Then we will meet again after we get older." Aryan said forcing a smile.

"Yes yes." Anvi replied while nodding.

"Do not make any best friends while I will be in another city." Anvi warned him.

"Never. I have only one best friend which is you, my flower."  He assured her.

"You'll remember me when we're older, right?" He added.

"Of course."

"Even if we don't meet for years?"

"Even then."

"Promise?" He asked for assurance.

"Pinky Promise." She promised.

The two little kids promised something this big.

Neither of them knew what life would bring.

Neither of them knew that distance would not be the thing separating them.

Aryan smiled as their pinkies remained linked.

He didn't know that life was about to test that promise in the cruelest way possible.

Because by the time Aryan would meet Anvi again, years later...

She wouldn't remember him at all.
